En la tradición oriental, la estructura, forma o kata se organiza a través de lo que se conoce por los Cinco Reinos o Elementos, (agua, madera, fuego, tierra y metal). Cada reino o elemento tiene dos partes, una yin y otra yang, lo que nos lleva a diez direcciones. Las diez direcciones se corresponden con los cinco órganos y las cinco vísceras, que al desequilibrarse se traduce en comportamientos anómalos en el ser humano.

Las diferentes tradiciones han buscado como equilibrar las erróneas manifestaciones del ser y han ideado sus propias metodologías.

Como el pensamiento chino parte de la observación de la naturaleza, estos Reinos se nombraron con los elementos Agua, Madera, Fuego, Tierra y Metal. 

Al Reino Mutante del Agua, pertenecen el Riñón y la Vejiga, el invierno, el norte, el sabor salado, el oído, los huesos, el miedo, el negro, la voluntad… El Reino Mutante de la Madera es el Hígado, la Vesícula Biliar, la primavera, el este, el verde, la imaginación, la vista, los músculos, el viento, el ácido, la cólera… En el Reino Mutante del Fuego tenemos el Corazón, el Intestino Delgado, el rojo, el calor, el verano, el sur, la alegría, el amargo, la conciencia, los vasos sanguíneos, etc. En el Reino Mutante de la Tierra nos encontramos el Bazo, el Estómago, el centro, la humedad, el estío, el dulce, el olor perfumado, el amarillo, la reflexión, la obsesión… Y en el Reino Mutante del Metal están el Pulmón, el Intestino Grueso, el este, el otoño, la sequedad, el blanco, el picante, la melancolía…. Os daréis cuenta que el admitir que todo lo que está dentro del mismo Reino guarda relación, puede implicar un verdadero «salto cuántico» mental para nosotros como pensadores occidentales.
